Insect: Under Attack

Chapter 4: Under Attack

Session 1. Book Exploring

Covered a new topic of Insects – Under Attack. Taught Kin what are the insect’s defense when they are under attack – disguise, camouflage, stingy, explosive.

These are few insects which have their own ways of protecting themselves:-

  • Assassin Bug
  • Bombardier Beetle
  • Hoverfly
  • Moth Caterpillar
  • Orchid mantis

The following day, did revision with Kin by asking him what can the insects do when they are under attack. Kin said “camouflage”, “sting” and suddenly he said “lose a body part”. I am pretty impressive.

Session 2. Video Learning – Self-defense

Let’s get amazed by how a bombardier beetles “bomb” his attacker.

When attacked, this beetle sets off a rapid chemical reaction inside its body, sending predators scrambling. This amazing chemical defense has some people scratching their heads: How could such a complex system evolve gradually—without killing the beetle too?

Watched how Orchid Mantis pre-subadult females show off their intense coloring.

Orchid Mantis waits motionless for unsuspecting insects to land. Then, quick as flash, it grabs its lunch!
